
According to the Nepal’s Senior Citizen Act (2006), people above the age of 60 are considered to be of geriatric age. According to World Bank 2020, Average Life Expectancy in Nepal is 69 years for male and 71 years for female. The average life expectancy was 61 years in 2000 AD and 34 years in 1950 AD. According to the 2011 census, there are more than 2.1 million senior citizens in Nepal. This is around 8.1 % of total population. It is expected to be around 20% of general population in 2050.
Geriatric OPD has been running at Bir Hospital to provide health service to senior citizens. Senior citizens receive service from Geriatric OPD daily. Senior citizens are getting holistic health service from Geriatric OPD from the support of General practice and Emergency department, Social service unit and National insurance service. It is planned to start Geriatric ward in near future which will be another milestone for the hospital and its beneficiaries.
