Introduction
Medical Genetics Unit has been established in BS 2070 (2013) and genetic laboratory was established in BS 2073 (2016 AD). This Unit is the first unit of its kind in our country and only center for genetic referral or genetic diagnosis. Genetic Laboratory was started with basic testing facilities. With time this service was increased tremendously and at present it has become the national referral centre for genetic disorders.
This is the current state of the art technology in genetics diagnostic and research. Knowing genetic disorders are not only concerned with diagnosing a case it is related to diagnosing a disease in a family, preventing the disease further, pre- symptomatic diagnosis, management of those disorders and opening a pathway for research as well. We provide genetic counselling about clinical genetic complications of disease, pedigree assessment, pre natal, interpretation of genetic results, discuss specific testing or therapy options, to handle psychological issues related to disease, and bridge liaison between healthcare professional (doctor) and patient. We have started Families with inherited disorders, oncogene screening, cytogenetic, molecular genetics, and hematogenetics. We were the first to establish this technology in the country.
Medical Genetics are a group that is constantly endeavouring for excellence in genetic disorder counselling, diagnosis, and management. In Nepal, we are committed to compassionate patient care, accurate and timely testing, and the generation of new knowledge in the field of genetic disorders.
